During pregnancy, the skin undergoes structural changes: it is drier and even irritated, which causes itching. This can affect the well-being of the mother-to-be.

During pregnancy, the whole body undergoes changes, and the skin is not spared. Acne, pregnancy mask, stretch marks... several dermatological disorders can occur and affect this unique moment of life-bearing.

Itching is one of the common symptoms during pregnancy (otherwise known as pruritus gravidarum), as it is a consequence of various skin changes:

  • Hormonal changes have an impact on the functioning of the whole body but also of the skin
  • Skin stretching (which can be even more important in case of a first pregnancy, an excessive maternal weight gain and a multiple pregnancy) activates the dermal nerve endings, leading to itching
  • Sweating increases as a result of highersweat gland activity, which can cause irritations
  • Finally, some mothers-to-be have gestational diabetes, with altered insulin levels that can cause dryness

All these elements can cause dryness and an altered skin barrier, leading to itching sensations. In order to rule out any pregnancy-related pathology, it is necessary to consult your doctor who will be able to establish a precise diagnosis and identify the source of itching to prescribe the right treatment and routine.

Don’t scratch your skin!

By scratching you skin, you will worsen the condition of your skin barrier, making it even more prone to external aggressions, which will cause irritation and make you want to scratch even more. It is called the itching-scratching vicious circle.

Choose the right skincare

Moisturising your skin every day is necessary. Use a daily moisturizer that respects your skin & avoid strongly perfumed care that can make your itch worse.

Take lukewarm showers

Hot water might soothe your skin and temporarily stop itching, but in reality it strips the skin of the natural oils and dries it out. It is recommended to take lukewarm showers or bath to limit the risk.

At Bioderma, we know how disturbing this daily itch can be and how it can affect quality of life.

That is why we designed the dermatological soothing care Atoderm SOS spray, specially tailored for itchy skin, including itching during pregnancy. It provides an instant soothing in 60 seconds for 6h of efficacy.

Combined with Enoxolone, a soothing ingredient, the Skin Relief technology regulates the release of agents responsible for itching, right from the source.

Niacinamide & Squalane stimulate the natural synthesis of lipids to strengthen the skin barrier and decrease dryness.
